Parameters of Cross-linguistic Variation in Expectation-based Minimalist Grammars (e-MGs)

چکیده

The fact that Parsing and Generation share the same grammatical knowledge is often considered null hypothesis (Momma Phillips 2018) but very few algorithms can take advantage of a cognitively plausible incremental procedure operates roughly in way words are produced understood real time. This especially difficult if we consider cross-linguistic variation has clear impact on word order. In this paper, I present one such formalism, dubbed Expectation-based Minimalist Grammar (e-MG), qualifies as simplified version (Conflated) Grammars, (C)MGs (Stabler 1997, 2011, 2013), Phase-based PMGs (Chesi 2005, 2007; Stabler 2011). crucial simplification consists driving structure building only using lexically encoded categorial top-down expectations. commitment to (in e-MGs PMGs, opposed (C)MGs, ) will be capture relevant set empirical asymmetries parameterized perspective which represents least common denominator both Generation.

Movement-Generalized Minimalist Grammars

A general framework is presented that allows for Minimalist grammars to use arbitrary movement operations under the proviso that they are all definable by monadic second-order formulas over derivation trees. Lowering, sidewards movement, and clustering, among others, are the result of instantiating the parameters of this framework in a certain way. Even though weak generative capacity is not in...

Adjuncts and Minimalist Grammars

The behaviour of adverbs and adjectives has qualities of both ordinary selection and something else, something unique to modifiers. This makes them difficult to model. Modifiers are generally optional and transparent to selection while arguments are required and driven by selection. Cinque [4] proposes that adverbs, functional heads, and descriptive adjectives are underlyingly uniformly ordered...

Minimalist grammars and recognition

Abstract Recent work has shown how basic ideas of the minimalist tradition in transformational syntax can be captured in a simple generative formalism, a “derivational minimalism.” This framework can model “remnant movement” analyses, which yield more complex antecedent-trace relations, suggesting a new and significant sense in which linguistic structures are “chain based.” Michaelis (1998) sho...

Inverse Linking in Minimalist Grammars

The phenomenon of Inverse Linking has proven challenging for theories of the syntax-semantics interface; a noun phrase within another behaves with respect to binding as though it were structurally independent. In this paper I show that, even within an LF-movement style approach to the syntax-semantics interface, we can derive all and only the appropriate meanings for such constructions using no...

Morphological Agreement in Minimalist Grammars

Minimalist Grammars provide a useful tool for modeling natural language syntax by defining grammar fragments in a very precise way. As a formalization of the Minimalist Program, they can accommodate linguistic analyses from the field of generative syntax. However, they have no machinery for encoding agreement; while morphology can be simulated by multiplying lexical items, there is no systemati...
